Learning in the classroom

The students at ISAE-SUPAERO come from all around the world to take very high-quality courses and enjoy an exceptional campus. Contacts with the professors and researchers, the laboratories and the scientific equipment are the cornerstones of the teaching programs that the Institute offers.

Remote classes

The students at ISAE-SUPAERO are increasingly seeking flexibility in their learning experience. They want to be able to follow their courses even when they can’t attend or are running late, or to be able to go back to them some time later to better understand them. The current health situation caused by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the implementation of these approaches for the students when they can’t attend or when there are quotas for access to the classroom.

Why not make it easier to teach hybrid courses?

The HyFlex@isae-supaero system simplifies the use of flexible, hybrid pedagogical scenarios: conventional course sessions focused on the students present in the classroom and others who have remote access to the course. They are for all teaching staff, whether avid digital learning practitioners or newcomers to the technique. No software has to be installed on the professor’s laptop – it can be used with the video projector as usual. Its simple architecture is essentially based on free components and can be used to equip many rooms on campus.

Hybrid

Hybrid courses consist in giving the lecture face-to-face in the classroom, while offering a digital window for remote students to follow the course.

Flexible

This flexible approach lets students attend the course physically, but also helps those who can’t attend to keep up by following the course remotely, live or later on.

Face-to-face in the classroom

Face-to-face classroom work is rich and interactive and can make use of all the peripheral devices that the HyFlex system has to offer to enhance the learning experience.

Remote and live transmission

Everything projected on the video projector in the room can be captured and transmitted remotely with a high-performance web conferencing system that allows interaction. Even students who couldn’t attend can benefit from the course!

72 hours of differed transmission

It is now possible to watch courses in your curriculum several days later. Useful for understanding them better or for studying!

Receiving remote courses

The classroom can transmit courses by a professor who is in another room on campus or on the other side of the world!

Using HyFlex

Easy to use for the professor and for the student

Special care has been taken to ensure the HyFlex@isae-supaero system’s user friendliness. For the professor to record and transmit a course or for the student to follow the course live or later on, all it takes is a few simple steps.

COMPOSITION OF THE VIDEO STREAM

With the control keyboard, all it takes is a stroke of a key to select the composition of the scene shown and to adapt it to your pedagogical needs.

1. Full-screen camera

At some points during the course, it is useful just to have the professor’s presence. A close-up of the professor can be shown.

2. Multi-source composition

A composition of sources can be selected, such as the professor’s PC and the camera or the tablet computer and the camera, or all three sources together.

3. Remote student matrix

Moments of interaction can be facilitated by displaying a matrix of the remote learners connected to the course and interacting with them.

4. Breaks and privacy

Several scenes are proposed for a moment of privacy or to announce a short break.

HDMI connection

No special software is needed on the professor’s laptop which, like the video projector, hooks up with a simple HDMI connector.

Handwritten text

A horizontal graphic tablet rounds out the peripheral capture devices for handwritten courses.

Video stream control

The video stream produced for live and differed transmission is controlled by the professor using a simple, ergonomic system.

Simple & functional

The HyFlex@isae-supaero system is integrated into a secured ergonomic console.
